About HSAMS

Situated in a unique and densely populated pocket of South West Hertfordshire, the SWH Consortium Schools are a group of 6 highly regarded and much coveted Secondary Schools. Applications to these schools number in the thousands with each individual school receiving four to five times their published admission number. This means that the demand for places far outstrips those available under the various criteria.

Herts School Admissions Made Simple came about as a result of the need for clarity surrounding secondary transfer applications and admissions to these popular schools. As a South West Herts Consortium schools admissions officer of more than ten years standing at several of those schools, I decided to set up an independent consultancy to demystify the testing and transition process and ultimately help parents to navigate the maze that is secondary transfer.

Whilst my expertise lies with the admissions processes of the South West Herts Consortium Schools – whose testing and admission arrangements are very familiar to me – I can help with clarification of the admissions policies of most South West Hertfordshire Schools; my network of professional connections means I can cut through the ambiguity, ask the right questions and deliver a response that is clear and logical.

In summary, I am able to present a broader and simplified explanation of the terms that Schools use in their admissions policies that will hopefully reduce the stress and anxiety this process can cause in the most level-headed parents.

What I Do

Every child’s individual set of circumstances is as unique as they are at the point of application. Whether you are planning to apply for the Academic Ability test or the Musical Aptitude test – or both – the key to understanding how to make strategic use of the four preferences (and they are preferences and not choices) with your local authority, prior to making your application for secondary transfer, is where many parents fall foul of the system. At whichever point in the process you may need guidance, I am available to take you through, step by step if necessary, to lead you to what I hope will prove to likely be a more favourable outcome.*

What My Clients Say

A Lifeline for Parents Navigating School Admissions & Appeals…

Kerry has been an absolute lifesaver for our family. From expertly guiding us through the complexities of the 11+ exams to supporting us through a school appeal when our youngest daughter needed a safer, happier environment, her knowledge and dedication have been invaluable. She not only understands the system inside out but also genuinely cares about the families she helps. Thanks to her, we navigated each challenge successfully, and our child is now thriving in the right school. We couldn’t be more grateful and would highly recommend her to any parent seeking support with school admissions or appeals.

Invaluable…

From the very initial meeting Kerry was so supportive and brilliant. Her knowledge of the process was invaluable. Having her reassurance and help throughout, made it so much easier to navigate and deal with. Kerry was an absolute pleasure to work with, she knows her stuff and talks with passion and experience – and we couldn’t have done it without her. Our appeal was successful, and Kerry was such a huge part in making this happen. We will be forever grateful to Kerry.

– Mr & Mrs Wilson, Tring

Extremely helpful…

“Mrs. King was extremely helpful in advising my family on how to navigate through what is the very complex secondary school system in my county. This knowledge helped us to understand the local catchment secondary schools, the scoring of the entrance test in South West Herts and the prospects of securing a place at the secondary school within our locality that would be a good – but not assured – option.

Mrs. King is also able to explain how appeals for parents who live within the catchment area for a school, work. Whether a school is extremely popular and therefore oversubscribed for example and where there may be a smaller intake of pupils for year 7, whereby these places are filled up by those with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), looked after children, those with siblings already at the school. Finally, the last places are awarded to those closest to the school who are in catchments. This was also explained and helped us to fully understand which schools may best suit our child and be a real possibility to secure a place.

Living within a catchment area will not always guarantee a place at your nearest secondary school. So, it’s crucial to understand the entire South West Herts entrance exam and application process. Armed with the above knowledge and information we were able to fully research the nearest and most suitable consortium schools for our children.

Mrs. King puts a gargantuan effort into supporting parents during what can be a very stressful period and I am truly grateful of her support to our family.”

Just wonderful…

“I first contacted Kerry when we received the disappointing news that none of our listed school choices were successful. We were given a school 6 miles away that was not appropriate for my daughter. I was more than unhappy and stressed with the whole admissions process at this point. Kerry was straight talking and to the point, and listened to my points as to why I needed a specific school for my daughter. Kerry was always quick to respond on emails and was reassuring and sympathetic on the days when it really felt like it was all getting on top of me. She helped me with my wording in the appeal statement, and really helped me to understand what points I needed to focus on most. She really knows the admission process inside out. She was extremely professional – and as a mum herself – completely understood how important this was to me and my daughter, and I really appreciated that more than anything.

Kerry was so supportive throughout the whole process – I really felt I couldn’t have done it without her input! Our appeal was successful, and I will forever be grateful to Kerry for all the encouragement, kindness and support she gave us. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking to go down the appeals route. She’s just wonderful.”

absolute godsend…

“Kerry has been an absolute godsend for our family, providing us with an unparalleled level of knowledge and guidance throughout the Consortium Secondary School admissions process in Hertfordshire.

From the very start, it was evident that Kerry’s expertise and dedication were unmatched. She deftly guided us through the application procedures for consortium schools, and her explanations of each school’s unique admission criteria were incredibly helpful in determining the best fit for our daughter’s aspirations and circumstances.

Kerry’s grasp of historical entrance test scoring, application numbers, and distance considerations gave us valuable insights into our chances of securing a place, making the process much less daunting.

When it came to considering a rule 2 medical application, Kerry took the time to walk us through the entire process with patience and care, whilst understanding the sensitivity of the information we were providing. She made sure we had all the necessary documents compiled and understood exactly what the panel would be looking for. Her unwavering support and guidance were truly invaluable throughout this crucial step.

Kerry thoughtfully prepared us for the appeals process, ensuring we were well-informed about the relevant points that could apply to our daughter’s situation. However, thanks to her proficiency and knowledge, we were delighted to find that the appeals process wasn’t necessary at all, as our daughter secured a spot in our first-choice school through continuing interest.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Kerry to any parent facing this challenging process. Her expertise not only made the application journey smoother but also eased the potential disappointment and stress that children like ours may experience in this grueling process. Kerry’s compassion and understanding of the emotional toll this process can take on parents and children alike have been truly invaluable, and we are immensely grateful for her unwavering support. Thanks to Kerry, our daughter’s future is looking brighter than ever!”

wholeheartedly cared…

“I was quite literally stunned when my youngest daughter was allocated a different secondary school to her older sister and was clearly not going to reach anywhere near the top of the waiting list during the multiple rounds of continued interest you must endure. Reaching out to Kerry helped me to navigate and make sense of the senseless system. Not only was I fighting for my daughter, but Kerry was also. She was fundamental in supporting me with my evidence for appeal. Her knowledge of school admissions is first class. She prepared me to deliver on the day of the appeal, giving me confidence in my case and helping to keep a lid on my emotions! My daughter won a place at the school of her choice, a place where she deserved to be. My life motto is ‘I can, I will, I must’ and we did! Kerry wholeheartedly cared about the outcome for my daughter, we are forever grateful.”

– Mrs Rachel T, Radlett

Kindness & empathy…

“I literally don’t know how we’d have got through the secondary school transfer process without Kerry. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, but her passion for helping families make the right decisions for their child makes things a whole lot easier. Plus, she always wraps the enormous amount of kindness and empathy around everything she does. Cannot recommend Kerry and her services highly enough.”

– Mrs. White

one in a million…

“Kerry has been an angel and a guiding light in what was a very difficult situation for myself and my daughter. She has unparalleled knowledge of the 11+ process but equally she showed so much compassion, kindness, and support in navigating this stressful and confusing process. She is a dream guide who worked so hard for my daughter and truly went above and beyond in assisting us with the appeals process, using her insights and advocacy skills to compile the necessary documentation and formulate the line of approach for our appeal. She was with us every step of the way in a process that took 6 months from start to finish and I will never be able to repay the legacy she has left behind in helping us to win our appeal and giving my children the brightest future, I could have possibly imagined for them considering our circumstances. She is one in a million and words will never be able to express the true gratitude she deserves. Thank you, Kerry.”

– Mrs M-A G, Watford

Excellent Advice…

“I have not only known Kerry for 7 years, but I have worked with her in Admissions for nearly that long. She is so knowledgeable about her subject and gives such excellent advice hat I know the parents who go to her come away armed with everything they need to apply for a secondary school place and in nearly ever case at their chosen school. She knows the appeal process inside out and can advise parents as to whether they have a valid case or not. Kerry works so hard at everything she does, and I would be so pleased to have her on my side of an appeals panel.”
